Your Most Important Meeting of the Day

Come away and rest…

Ironically, one of the hardest things to do is rest. Why won’t we rest? Full schedules. Carpool followed by sports and dinner and homework. Full time jobs, social lives, and even ministry.

Resting in a world that doesn’t rest.

Perhaps the number one enemy of rest is the urgency of the moment. Oh the love-hate relationship I have with my iPhone! What would I do without my GPS and Google which answers so many “important” questions. I am never without entertainment when my best friend, the smart phone is close by. There is Facebook, email, texts, group texts, Instagram, Twitter, news stories, and did I mention GROUP TEXTS?! I can turn off my notifications but what if I miss something? My FOMO kicks in big time. And better yet, what if someone NEEDS me?

I recently read the story in Luke, about Jesus cleansing a leper. The last couple of verses jumped off the page. “But the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray (Luke 5:15,16).” I realize I am pointing out the obvious, but if Jesus who was healing people right and left took time to get away and pray in the wilderness, then shouldn’t we? Think about what Satan, the great accuser might have whispered. “Those people need You and You are wasting time! How selfish!” But Jesus knew He was doing the will of His Father by spending time with Him.

No one’s time on earth could be more valuable than the short three years Jesus spent in ministry but He knew He needed time with the Father. Is there anything I am doing that is more important that what Jesus was doing? OF COURSE NOT. But, when I stop to pray and read my Bible I still have such ridiculous thoughts. “You don’t have time for this. There is laundry. What about your business you need to be growing? If you wanted to pray and read the Bible you should have gotten up earlier this morning. You are being selfish.” The enemy knows my most important meeting of the day is with God and he just can’t stand it!

Jesus knows our struggle because He graciously came to earth and lived it. I love His beautiful words of hope, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Maybe the most productive thing YOU can do today is rest. Ask God for the deep rest of the soul that comes from spending time with Him. He is the only One who knows your future so talk with Him about it. And go rest.
