Have you seen the picture floating around social media of a horse chained to a plastic chair? It seems so ridiculous that the horse doesn’t even try to break free, but we all do it, especially as Christians. We have the same Spirit Who raised Jesus Christ from the dead living inside of us (Romans 8:11) and yet we act as if we are powerless.
In Matthew 17, a desperate man came to Jesus saying that the disciples couldn’t drive out a demon from his son and begged for Jesus’ help. Can you hear the frustration in Jesus’ voice when the disciples ask why they couldn’t do it themselves? “And He said to them, ‘because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.’”
So what is YOUR plastic chair? Let’s use the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, to unchain ourselves from each lie that is holding us back.
Chained to Your Past
Oh how Satan would love for you to think that it is too late for you! He is telling you that you have ruined your life by your choices. WRONG. God, who spoke the world into existence will use you despite the ashes of your past.
Isaiah 61:3, “To grant those who mourn in Zion, giving them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord that He may be glorified.”
II Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”
Isaiah 43:18-19: “Do not call to mind the former things, or ponder things of the past. Behold, I will do something new, now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.”
Chained to Other’s Opinions
Do you feel that you do not have options because others would not approve? Maybe you don’t even consider anything different for your life because you know it would rock the boat. There is one thing you might not have considered can break you free from these chains. By thinking about other’s opinions and reactions, we could completely miss our purpose because those voices are drowning out God’s whispers. Yep, it’s that important.
Galatians 1:10: “For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still striving to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.”
Colossians 3:23-24: “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.”
Chained to Limiting Mindsets
Do you see yourself the way God sees you? I DOUBT IT! Maybe you see yourself the way others see you. More probably, you see yourself the way you THINK others see you. Whether it is your financial status, appearance, or age, you have put yourself in a box without realizing it. This old mindset is keeping you from even considering your purpose. God created you exactly the way He wanted to and set you up for success before the foundations of the world.
Psalm 139:13-14: “For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.”
Ephesians 2:10: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”
Chained to Old Habits
These habits don’t have to be anything sinister. They are simply taking up your time. Often to step into our calling we will have to give up or greatly limit something. Maybe its TV or social media or even an entire career. These habits are so ingrained in our lives that we have to ask God to show us what is holding us back.
II Timothy 2:4: “No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.”
Hebrews 12:1-2: “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
I pray that God will reveal to you that plastic chair in your life so you can run like the wind into His purpose.
